Wrinkled underlayment
An underlayment is placed under asphalt shingles for different reasons—it can act as protective layer for moisture, a barrier against the elements, a component to hide roof imperfections, and a way to enhance a roof assembly’s fire rating. Most underlayments have an adhesive side. If the adhesive is not applied straight and flat, the creases can start pushing on shingles over time.
Improperly applied felt
Similar to underlayment, buckled shingles can occur if the felt material underneath the shingles is installed wrong. Felt can rise and buckle if not applied flatly to the roof. Naturally, the shingles over them will buckle as well.
Poor attic ventilation
If an attic is not well-ventilated, moisture can start to build up, and with no place to go, moisture can become condensation and begin to damage the roof structure. When it penetrates the underlayment and roof shingles, over time, the shingles will begin to warp and buckle.
Roof deck movement
Under your shingles is a layer of plywood sheets that cover your home. When these sheets are not properly secured to the roof framing, they can begin moving every which way, and move your shingles along with them. Likewise, deck movement can also occur when the plywood has become saturated with moisture. This can cause the deck to rot and warp, which can lead to serious structural problems to your home.
